JON TAPLIN: We showed up and we stayed at the Seal Rock Inn, right by the ocean. Soon as we hit the hotel, Robbie had a fever of a hundred and four degrees. This was on a Wednesday, I believe. The shows were going to be Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights. Two shows each night. With the Sons of Champlin and the Ace of Cups playing ahead of us. Robbie said, "I'll stay here. You guys go do the sound check without me."
We went to do the sound check without Robbie and get it all set up. This was just a vast hall compared to what they had experienced before. We went back and the doctors were leaving Robbie's room and there was no improvement whatsoever. For reasons I'll never really understand, Albert refused to postpone anything by saying that this guy was just too sick to play. He just kept putting off the decision.
BILL: I got a call from someone who said, "You better come to the hotel. Robbie Robertson is very ill."
I got to the hotel and Albert was there. He said, "We've got a problem, we may have to cancel. I don't want to. But we might have to." By now, there were a lot of people and money involved in this. There was such a buzz in town about the band that I was willing to do anything I could to make it happen.
ROBBIE ROBERTSON: These doctors came over and gave me shots. The rest of the guys were rehearsing because we had never played anywhere except between ourselves. Then someone else said, "I know a better doctor." I was desperate. I felt so bad that anything would have been a relief. The other doctor came and he gave me some shots. I was just getting weaker all the time with all these drugs in me. I was in bed feeling helpless and bad about this thing.
By now, we were racing the clock. We had that classic script going. We were down to the day before and I was worse. I couldn't make it to the bathroom by myself. I was so weak. It was horrible. I couldn't eat. I couldn't do anything. All the pressure piled on was making it worse.
So now it was the day of the show. I woke up and I felt terrible. I felt worse than I did on any of the other days. I was eating little health biscuits and it was like, "This isn't going to do it. I'm dying, and you're giving me a health biscuit?" So ⦠a last resort. Bill Graham said to Albert, "What do you think about getting a hypnotist?" Albert liked that kind of action. He said, "Well, we've got nothing to lose here. We've tried everything else and none of it has worked."
BILL: I got to the hotel and I said to Albert, "What do you want to do?" He said, "I'll tell you what. I have an idea. Can you find me a hypnotist?" I got hold of the Yellow Pages and I looked.
